Wow, he drove 100-miles off course just to help teach you a lesson?! That's dedication! Sounds like it all panned out in your favor though. I know people who can't find their way across Fort Collins without GPS, let alone a giant desert. Props to your grandpa!
Was just working on planning a road trip last night and it reminded me that I should listen to this. I said a lot of this while planning ours for this summer. Mostly 'thank you Google maps with your exact times (for the most part) and distances!'
And I thought about the old road Atlas to. Which reminded me of a time that I was on a road trip with my grandpa and sister to Phoenix, Arizona. We used to always go on road trips with my grandma and grandpa. But I think this one was after my Grandma had passed away. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure my grandpa's favorite game in the car was 'here's the map, get us there!' On this particular trip I was chosen as Navigator. He threw the Atlas back to me and said get us to Phoenix. Mostly it was whenever you got to junction where you needed to go somewhere because the road ran out he'd be like which way do we go. We couldn't take interstates, unless it was the only option. I've never been very good at left or right so at one point I told him to go left and about 100 or 150 miles later so there was a sign that said welcome to New Mexico. We obviously were not going the right direction and he knew it (he'd driven on these roads tins of times) but he did it anyhow. He made us stop and figure out where I went wrong and how to fix it. It's pretty much the only time I ever messed up. But we eventually got to Phoenix! I think this game is probably gave me the good directional since that I now possess. But, its a lost art, you really don't have to know anything cos Google Maps can do it all for you. But I'm still glad I have all of that knowledge and I miss those good ol' days.
